Claudio Monteverdi was the pioneering composer who arguably brought the music of the Renaissance to its peak and laid the foundation for the Baroque period. His masterpiece Vespro della Beata Vergine was written as a kind of large-scale audition piece for a new post, which he eventually attained at St. Mark’s in Venice. Monteverdi wrote this Vespers service in a way that showed off his versatility with counterpoint; the newer, more operatic theatrical styles (his opera Orfeo premiered in 1607); solo writing; double choir polyphony; and the sheer beauty of music.
For this monumental work of dazzling vocal and instrumental writing, we are collaborating with True Concord to bring this work to Tucson audiences. Tesserae, an ensemble of early instruments, will accompany the voices and soloists of GRAMMY-nominated True Concord. Eric Holtan conducts.
