Cappella
Artemisia is an ensemble of female singers and instrumentalists
dedicated to performing music from Italian convents of the 16th and 17th
centuries. Its repertoire includes forgotten works composed by nuns
themselves, as well as music written by celebrated male composers and
intended for performance in the convents. The beautifully sensual texts of
the Canticum canticorum were often set to music in the 16th and
17th centuries, both outside and inside the convent walls. Despite the
complex polyphony of the repertoire, which frequently includes parts for
tenors and basses, this music is presented here for the first time, as it
would originally have been heard: without male voices.
